Awards Categories

The Flame Awards are the largest celebration of innovation and excellence from across the sector, with hundreds of organisations vying for the highly coveted accolades every year.
As a result of entering the Flame Awards you will receive unique insight into what makes your organisation great, and where you have room for improvement. 


Active Workplace of the Year

This award recognises a workplace that is committed to supporting employees to participate in physical activity. This could include providing gym, activity facilities or opportunities, activity tracking, team outdoor pursuits, cycle to work schemes or workplace challenges, preferably as part of a complete health and wellbeing strategy. 

Physical Activity Campaign of the Year

This award recognises a marketing campaign which promotes active lifestyles, to a particular demographic or the general population. Assessment is based on the extent to which the campaign can evidence its engagement and raising awareness.

Go Outdoors

This award recognises an organisation, project, programme, race or event that can demonstrate significant positive impact on people’s lives, and engaged new audiences, through outdoor physical activity.

Healthy Partnerships

This award recognises a partnership which promotes and delivers a healthy outcome based initiative. Assessment is based on the extent to which a programme, product or initiative delivers a health based goal and has a demonstrable impact/outcome, for the NHS, local authority or direct to consumers.

Shaping Young Lives

This award recognises a programme or product which has significantly improved the lives of young people through getting them active with a demonstrable impact/outcome.

Spark of Innovation

This award recognises the latest innovations in the sector that support people to become more active. Entrants could include digital innovations and technologies, new products, services and programmes that are changing the future of physical activity in the UK.

Supplier of the Year

This award recognises a supplier (product or service) who enable more people to get active by understanding clients’ needs and demonstrating excellence in customer satisfaction and loyalty.

Spirit of Flame

Nominate an outstanding individual , as an  “Unsung Hero” from within your organisation.  Your nominee will show genuine dedication to physical activity, through engaging new or hard to reach audiences in activity, outside the remit of employed work. This individual will have created a lasting legacy in their community, that continues to inspire more people, to be more active, more often.

Leisure Centre of the Year (Streamline)

The leisure centre must have in-house or contracted management, with some unrestricted pay and play access. We advise that they have been operating for at least 12 months by 31st December 2016. In order to be eligible for the ‘streamline’ category, the centre must have less than five of the elements outlined in the self-assessment questionnaire.

Leisure Centre of the Year (Multi-use)

The leisure centre must have in-house or contracted management, with some unrestricted pay and play access. We advise that they have been operating for at least 12 months by 31st December 2016. In order to be eligible for the ‘multi-use’ category, the centre must have five or more of the elements outlined in the self-assessment questionnaire.

Health Club of the Year (Streamline)

Entrants must be a private Health Club. We advise that they have been operating for at least 12 months by 31st December 2016. In order to be eligible for the ‘streamline’ category, the club must have less than five of the elements outlined in the self-assessment questionnaire.

Health Club of the Year (Multi-use)

Entrants must be a private Health Club. We advise that they have been operating for at least 12 months by 31st December 2016. In order to be eligible for the ‘multi-use’ category, the club must have five or more of the elements outlined in the self-assessment questionnaire.

Health Club Operator of the Year & Leisure Centre Operator of the Year

Enter the most highly coveted award in the sector, when you submit three or more sites into the Facility Awards for your chance to compete for the acccolade of Health Club or Leisure Centre Operator of the Year. ukactive will contact all entrants who are eligible to in January 2017 with more information on how to enter. Assessment is based on performance across the organisation.

The Next Level

This award will compare  entrant scores from 2016 and 2017 to recognise the Leisure Centre or Health Club that has demonstrated the most significant increase.  You will be prompted to enter this, if entering a Facility Award. Entry to this award is free of charge.
