ukactive launches new partnership project to get Britain’s young people movingback to list
18 April 2013
A new partnership project facilitated by ukactive, bringing together ukactive's commercial partner Asda and community sports organisation Sports Leaders UK, was launched today at the House of Commons.
The new partnership - Asda Active Sports Leaders, will improve the health and job prospects of Britain's young people by supporting over 150,000 young people a year to get qualifications in Sports Leadership.
It will be the first commercial partnership project to receive the ‘Inspired by 2012' brand launched by the Department of Culture, Media and Sport last week.
Confirmed attendees at the launch included Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson, who is President of Sports Leaders UK. Speaking at the launch, CEO of ukactive David Stalker said: "ukactive exists for one reason and one reason only - to get more people, more active, more often. If we are to achieve this we need to ensure that our young people across the UK are inspired and supported to get active.
"Asda Active and Sports Leaders UK represent the very best example of a partnership which together adds up to far more than just its component parts. We're delighted that we've been able to play such a role in bringing the two organisations together.
"We had just had an amazing 2012; working together, Asda and ukactive worked on 22 community events which reached over 70,000 families across the UK. The insight we gained from these events is that mums up and down the country are concerned about two things: the health of their children, and the job prospects for their children.
"Sports Leaders UK are the ideal partner to support Asda in their ambition to help mums and their children to lead healthier, more physically active lifestyles and support the next generation of Olympic and Paralympic champions. Sports Leaders UK are focused on providing the key skills required to not only get active but get a job as a result - helping young people to improve their health, gain further education and strengthen their chances of employment."
Baronness Tanni-Grey Thompson said: "Today marks a transformational day in Sports Leaders UK's journey of inspiration marking the significant support of Asda for the organisation. The generation that we promised to inspire in Singapore when we won the right to host the London 2012 Games are exactly this generation that the Asda Active Sports Leaders programme is shaping.
"This is an ambitious, even audacious, programme that will reach over 400,000 young people in the next few years and will aim to become the household name and benchmark for community involvement and inspiration in the UK.
"I would like to thank Asda for supporting Sports Leaders UK and the young people of Britain, and also ukactive in helping to bring the project together. And I'd like to thank all of you, for by being here, supporting this programme."
Dawn Clements, Head of Asda in the Community added:
"Asda Active is our over arching campaign to ‘Get Britain Moving' and make it easier for our local communities to lead healthier and more active lifestyles. Last year in partnership with ukactive, we provided a number of free community sports events, helping introduce over 70,000 families across the UK to a range of sports.
"Last year, over 5,000 Asda mums told us that their two biggest concerns were about their children's health and their prospects for employment. When ukactive brought our organisations together, we quickly saw the potential for the Sports Leaders qualifications to address these areas and give a whole generation a positive chance to succeed and improve things for themselves and their communities."
