A Big Month for CIMSPA back to list

08 August 2014

David will be in post for a year during which time he will continue to support the transition of the organisation in line with the ambition of its landmark business plan approved by members in November 2013. David will also lead the recruitment of a full time CEO to build upon the work of the Transitional Team currently in place and headed up by Tara Dillon, interim COO.

The appointment arrives in a good month for CIMSPA during which membership grew in recognition of the work of the Transitional Team. Several other notable milestones have been achieved by the Transitional Team who are busy assembling the Institute's Professional Development Framework, building partnerships with Awarding Organisations and identifying education and training programmes for CIMSPA members.

Since November 2013 CIMSPA Trustee, Carl Bennett, has acted as the Interim-Chairman of the CIMSA Board and also led the Nominations Committee responsible for appointing the Chairman, with the support of recruitment specialists HPA Advisory.

After significant consideration the Board decided that the challenge and opportunity facing CIMSPA currently in delivering its new Business Plan required a Chairperson who could 'hit the ground' running with an existing detailed understanding of the organisation and the sector it serves, whilst also being able to invest 'over and above' the typical support provided by an Independent Non-Executive Chairman. The Board unanimously agreed that David represented these qualities in no small part due to his efforts during 2013 in reviewing the Institute and subsequently designing the organisation's business plan.

The nominations committee and Board of Trustees have also announced the appointment of a Vice Chairman, Carl Bennett, who following a successful period as interim Chair will support David and the Transitional Team.

Additionally, the Board will now move forward with the recruitment of further Trustees from the sector, and an ambassador who will act as the Patron for the Institute. A Patron will communicate the aims and objectives of the Institute and the importance of professional development across the Sport and Activity Sector.

Following David Stalker's year long term an Independent Non-Executive Chairman will be appointed as originally outlined by the Business and Governance Plan discussed at the 2013 Annual General Meeting.

Commenting on the appointment CIMSPA Vice-Chairman Carl Bennett stated, "We are delighted to have appointed David, CIMSPA is currently operating in a fast paced environment with new opportunities becoming available everyday, as such it is crucial that we are providing the Interim COO and in due course CEO with necessary support from a dedicated Chairman. By ensuring that the Chairman and Vice-Chairman both have a detailed knowledge of the Institute's current position and its aims and objectives we will ensure the Institute is best placed to reach its potential"

"The Board have not taken this decision lightly particularly given the sterling quality of the candidates available. However iff the sector repeats the process of the last twelve months then in a years' time we will be operating in an even further advanced position and be well placed to return to our recruitment of a long term independent Chair person.

Incoming Chairman David Stalker welcomed the opportunity, 'The first six months of the Transition have been challenging there is no doubt about that but that is because the opportunities and potential role for the Institute have grown.

"I am delighted to have been given the opportunity to support the Interim COO and in due course CEO to grasp all of the opportunities that are falling in front of the Institute. It will be a challenging and busy year but I believe in the importance and potential of the Institute more than ever before and am delighted that we are beginning to see it come to fruition"

"In my role as Chair I will be calling upon employers to continue to advocate the highest principles of professionalism and support their Institute. I also look forward to recruiting new dynamic individuals onto the Board who will bring a fresh perspective and ideas on how we can continue to support our sector
