Excellence in training and workforce development recognised as ukactive and CIMSPA announce Active Training Awards 2014 winners

150 of the industry's top training companies, employers, colleagues, higher education providers and commercial vocational providers gathered together last night at the inaugural Active Training Awards Ceremony at the Crowne Plaza in Marlow to recognise and toast exceptional performance and commitment to vocational training and development within the physical activity sector.

Organisations who triumphed on the night include Future Fit Training, Swimming Nature, ICON TRAINING, Piloxing, GLL, Aspire / InstructAbility, Schwinn Cycling, LifeTime Training and Gary Paish of Everyone Active. The Active Training Awards is run in partnership with the Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity (CIMSPA), and is sponsored by Active IQ.

The Awards follow a rigorous three stage assessment process comprising an initial submission and feedback from employers and learners. The final stage includes a presentation to a panel of experts from a diverse range of sectors, all sharing a common focus on education and training. Expert judges included Tara Dillon and Rebecca Ward of CIMSPA, Leanna Jones of Sport England, Iain Bogie of McDonalds, James Emmett from Pearson, Dr. Chris Beedie from the ukactive Research Institute, Prof. Gavin Sandercock of the University of Essex, Tony Majakis of Fit Quest, Stuart Wilson formerly of Skills Active, Fred Grindrod from the Education & Training Foundation, Ailin O'Cathain from the Federation of Awarding Organisations, Steve Mitchell a Skills and Sport Consultant and Rhys Thomas of BIZ Network.

David Stalker, CEO, ukactive and Chairman, CIMSPA, says, "Training and development is rapidly changing to meet demands to today's workforce. We've focussed this year on driving a discernable shift in training standards and it's great to be able to recognise top players across the breadth of the industry as they continue to deliver the best-in-class vocational training that is the bedrock of our sector. ."

Tara Dillon, Interim COO, CIMSPA, added, "The Active Training Awards night was a great event celebrating the outstanding work being done in our sector to develop the current and future workforce. CIMSPA is fully committed to driving up standards and the Active Training Awards underscores our belief in what our sector can and should be doing in this crucial area."

The Awards consolidate a positive shift in the area of training and workforce development over the past 12 months, which has included the awarding last month of Trailblazer status to the physical activity sector, placing responsibility for defining apprenticeship standards for Personal Trainers and Leisure Managers in the hands of employers.

In addition to the Awards night Gala dinner, ukactive and CIMSPA hosted an afternoon training workshop to share insights on workforce development and facilitate discussions on education and training. This workshop highlighted ukactive and CIMSPA's ongoing commitment to driving the best practice and knowledge sharing agenda around vocational training in the sector.
