ukactive CEO David Stalker to step down

ukactive has today announced that its long standing CEO, David Stalker, is to step down from his full time executive post over the coming months, after seven successful years at the helm.

David has led ukactive through a period of consistent and substantial growth during his time in charge including transforming the organisation and its standing, not least through leading a 12 month re-branding programme that has enabled the organisation to successfully fill its broader health brief. His work throughout this period served to champion the issue of physical activity across the country, elevating its importance to society as a top tier public health concern.

Under his leadership, ukactive has grown and continuously diversified its membership base by breaking the 3,500 member barrier with members representing the full spectrum of the physical activity world - from public, private and third sectors. The organisation accelerated the values of its bespoke consultancy service (formally known as the Vanguard Group) which now provides insight and guidance to 35 of the largest organisations in the sector.

David leaves ukactive with an industry-first fully established academic institute dedicated to publishing translational research on physical activity, memberships at an all-time high and with partners across the broadest spectrum of industries in the organisation's history. David has had an indelible impact on the sector not least through dramatically developing the annual Flame Conference and Ball which has become the leading event in the industry's annual calendar.

Most recently David oversaw ukactive's governance review, which led to the ukactive membership approving the reform of the ukactive Board along the lines recommended as best practice for third sector organisations. ukactive is now in the process of recruiting a small strategic Board formed primarily of independent non-executive directors, a democratically elected Membership Council and key advisory committees to oversee ukactive's ongoing sector leading work.

As part of the transition David will join the new Board for 12 months in order to support the next Chief Executive and new Chair, replacing the outgoing ukactive Chairman Fred Turok. David will maintain his executive role with the organisation up until the end of June 2015 to assure a smooth transition. He will be supported in doing so by the existing Executive Team at ukactive which will continue to drive forward the existing business plan with experienced figures such as Geraldine Tuck (with over 20 years' experience in the sector) and award winning public affairs professional Steven Ward continuing to play a prominent role. This team was recently strengthened with the appointment of ex-Deloitte consultant Will Smithard to the role of Strategic Projects Director having spent almost four years seconded to LOCOG in a senior planning and programme management role.

The outgoing chair, Fred, will support David and the Nominations Committee to appoint a new Chairman and subsequently a CEO.

Speaking on behalf of the outgoing board Fred stated, "We must thank David for his tireless work and leadership over the seven years. When David joined we had huge ambitions for the organisation and I can honestly say he has surpassed all expectations."

Commenting on his departure David said, "I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at ukactive, as I have seen the organisation and the sector it represents growth and diversify. Not only has ukactive grown its membership through increasing the number and range of services but it has also improved the nation's understanding of physical inactivity, which I am incredibly proud of. I have no doubt that the team will take this organisation from strength to strength as it continues to support its members and partners to turn the tide of inactivity. I now look forward to once again being a member and supporter of ukactive and helping the new CEO with through new position on the Board."
