ukactive request applications for new Membership Council

ukactive today opened the process for existing members to apply for its newly-formed Membership Council.

The Membership Council, to be chaired by outgoing CEO David Stalker, will be the formal voice of the membership base in ukactive governance and provide the direct and undiluted voice of employers on challenging topics of substance for the sector, such as issues relating to skills and workforce development. The decisions taken by the Membership Council will represent the elected representative voice of employers across the sector.

The application window for members wishing to put themselves forward for a position on the Membership Council will close on Friday 15 May and will ask for members to apply across nine categories: Private Fitness Multi Site, Private Fitness Independent, Local Authority Leisure Trust, Local Authority Management Contractor, Local Authority Direct Service Organisation, Educational Facility, Outdoor Activity Provider, Children's Activity Provider, and Wider Activity Provider.

As agreed during the Governance Review process, applications for the Membership Council will not be accepted from sector suppliers. Suppliers will have a formal voice via the refreshed Forum for Exercise & Equipment Suppliers (FEES) grouping. This is an established grouping within the ukactive governance structure and will directly feed into the Membership Council, which will facilitate the communications with the Board.

Members will be asked to apply for a position on the Membership Council should they meet the following criteria.

  • They are a senior executive within their organisation
  • They have sufficient experience within the sector
  • They can demonstrate that they have an appropriate network and will be equipped to speak on behalf of their sub-sector
  • They can demonstrate that they are a strong advocate for ukactive's work and have been sufficiently engaged with the organisation through attendance at key events and discussions

In order to meet the requirements to be on the Membership Council each applicant must agree to:

  • The role being a voluntary position with no payment for services
  • Their respective organisation remaining a member of ukactive for the duration of their position on the Membership Council
  • Providing a minimum of four days' commitment per annum to the post to attend Membership Council meetings
  • Committing to being in post for at least a 12 month continuous period
  • Attend key ukactive sector events, such as the Flame Conference and Awards, National Summit and 25th anniversary event

The application form is available via the ukactive website: The deadline for applications is Friday 15th May. Each application will be reviewed for its suitability by the ukactive Nominations Committee, which will meet after the applications deadline. The election period is due to run from Tuesday 26th May to Friday 12th June. The Membership Council is due to be unveiled at the ukactive Flame Conference in Telford on Wednesday 24th June.

Commenting on the process, ukactive Executive Director Steven Ward said:

"ukactive currently has over 3,500 members and the Membership Council is being set up to provide a powerful voice between our Board and our members. The Membership Council is being set up based on the recommendations of an independent review into our governance by Portas, which concluded at the back end of last year. It will be a high impact body and therefore we are looking for some really strong, sector-leaders to put themselves forward for election".

Commenting on his new role as a Director of ukactive and Chair of the Membership Council, former ukactive Chief Executive David Stalker said: "I thoroughly look forward to a new challenge of chairing the ukactive Membership Council and working with a high calibre individuals from within the physical activity sector as a leading voice to work with the ukactive Board to drive the sector forward. There are many stand out people who when they unite can make a real positive difference in getting more people, more active, more often. We look forward to receiving strong applications for the nine positions".
