Penny Mordaunt MP announces new partnership to support disabled people being active

The Minister of State for Disabled People, Work and Health Penny Mordaunt MP has unveiled plans for a pioneering cross-sector scheme to give disabled people and those with long-term health conditions better access to physical activity opportunities.

The cross-sector initiative – to be led by ukactive, Sport England, Disability Rights UK and the English Federation of Disability Sport – will aim to remove barriers to physical activity for disabled people so they can tap into its myriad benefits.

Community leisure contributes more than £3.3bn to UK society, according to a landmark report that is the first to put a figure on the wider social value of leisure centres in Britain.

Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson will today (1st November) call on government to help make physical activity a ‘national religion’ and harness its potential to tackle some of the biggest challenges faced by society.

Grey-Thompson, who is Chair of non-profit health body ukactive, will use her keynote address at the ukactive National Summit in Westminster to call for urgent action to tackle the UK’s mounting physical inactivity crisis, which costs £20bn each year and causes 37,000 deaths.

Use Meals on Wheels and pharmacists to keep older adults active: report

Teaching health and social care professionals such as pharmacists and ‘Meals on Wheels’ staff to deliver exercise interventions, could be key to curtailing the UK’s growing ageing crisis.

That’s according to a new report from not-for-profit health body ukactive in partnership with Life Fitness, which says innovative solutions for keeping older people active and independent could save billions of pounds in NHS and social care costs by preventing disease.

With one in five of the UK population due to be aged 65+ by 2025 and social care currently costing the country £100bn per year, the authors warn that failure to promote regular physical activity among older adults could prove “catastrophic”.
