  Public Leisure generates over £3.3bn in social value to the UK

Community leisure contributes more than £3.3bn to UK society, according to a landmark report that is the first to put a figure on the wider social value of leisure centres in Britain.

These findings are fully detailed in Physical Activity: A Social Solution, one of three milestone insight reports released yesterday (1st November) at ukactive’s National Summit at the QEII centre in Westminster.

Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson will today (1st November) call on government to help make physical activity a ‘national religion’ and harness its potential to tackle some of the biggest challenges faced by society.

Grey-Thompson, who is Chair of non-profit health body ukactive, will use her keynote address at the ukactive National Summit in Westminster to call for urgent action to tackle the UK’s mounting physical inactivity crisis, which costs £20bn each year and causes 37,000 deaths.

Use Meals on Wheels and pharmacists to keep older adults active: report

Teaching health and social care professionals such as pharmacists and ‘Meals on Wheels’ staff to deliver exercise interventions, could be key to curtailing the UK’s growing ageing crisis.

That’s according to a new report from not-for-profit health body ukactive in partnership with Life Fitness, which says innovative solutions for keeping older people active and independent could save billions of pounds in NHS and social care costs by preventing disease.

With one in five of the UK population due to be aged 65+ by 2025 and social care currently costing the country £100bn per year, the authors warn that failure to promote regular physical activity among older adults could prove “catastrophic”.

ActiveLab has announced a raft of new heavyweight partners as the Fit-Tech startup accelerator pursues a global focus for its second instalment launching on October 30th.

Run by not-for-profit health body ukactive, ActiveLab launched in September 2016 with a mission to revolutionise the way we move by matching Fit-Tech startups with the leading lights of business and physical activity. The inaugural version saw 12 finalists take part in an intensive three-month accelerator which has helped the cohort of innovative startups to raise more than £3.1m in early stage funding to date and launch pilots with major blue chips such as AXA PPP healthcare.

Landmark National Fitness Day gets 5m more Britons moving

More than 5.1m Britons laced up their trainers and got active on 27th September as National Fitness Day 2017 made good on its pledge to ‘Move the Nation’.

Organised by not-for-profit health body ukactive, the largest National Fitness Day (NFD) ever saw over 20,000 free events (up 11 per cent from NFD 2016) across 6,297 venues (up 7 per cent) celebrate the fun of physical activity.
