Leading lights in the physical activity sector revealed as finalists for revamped Flame 2017

ukactive today (27th April) unveiled the finalists for the Flame Awards 2017, which will see public, private and third sector heavyweights lock horns for the physical activity sector’s most prestigious accolades. 

Places for People Leisure lead the way amidst tough competition among local authority operators, with nine nominations in four categories, closely followed by Serco Leisure, Everyone Active, GLL and SIV with four nominations each.

Getting older people moving through activities such as Zumba and dance topped the news agenda today (10 April), with several national newspapers highlighting the benefits of regular exercise for over 60s, following a ukactive press campaign.

New ukactive analysis on physical activity interventions among over 60s gained prominent coverage in the Sunday Telegraph. It found that getting Britons aged over 60 to do five 30-minute dance classes a week could help save the NHS £11bn, at a time when health budgets and hospitals are being stretched to the limit. The research also found that a regular dance could prevent almost 850,000 cases of disease and injury, including almost a third of hip fractures.

ukactive Public Affairs Director Huw Edwards has made a passionate call to arms for Britain to tackle the toxic toll of sedentary office culture by placing greater emphasis on getting workers active.

Physical inactivity costs the UK £20bn each year and is a particular blight on the modern workforce. Sitting at a desk for eight hours a day increases the risk of premature death by up to 60 per cent and costs UK businesses productivity.
