MPs call on Government to encourage active mile initiatives in schools

MP discussed the most effective ways to allocate funding from the soft drinks industry levy for sport inside and outside of schools, today in a Westminster Hall debate tabled by Justin Tomlinson MP.

David Rutley, MP for Macclesfield, called on Government to prioritise efforts to encourage schools to adopt Active Mile initiatives during 2017.

Mr Rutley argued that active mile concepts, which were referenced in the Government’s Childhood Obesity Plan, are “simple, basic initiatives, that encourage and inspire children, taking just 15 minutes out of the day to run, walk, or jog”

ukactive and Premier Sport research shines spotlight on wealth disparity around kids’ fitness levels

Research carried out by ukactive and children’s activity provider Premier Sport made national headlines today. In findings reported by The Sun; poorer children’s fitness levels fall 18 times faster in the summer holidays than their more affluent counterparts.

The research was carried out using the My Personal Best Challenge developed by Premier Sport. In 14 schools across the northwest of England, 400 children were tracked over a 13-month period as part of the first study of its kind to measure fitness levels both before and after the summer holidays.

Adrian Packer, Sarah Kendall, Peter Bonfield and Phil Rumbelow have all joined the ukactive board in recent months. The high-profile new Directors have been drawn from several different sectors and their varying backgrounds will broaden the experience of the wider Board and underpin the far-reaching ambitions of ukactive.

Leading not-for-profit health body ukactive is calling for an urgent overhaul of physical activity delivery in schools after new data showed 1 in 5 children missing out on school PE. 

The Health Survey for England 2015 revealed 21 per cent of 5-15-year olds did no form of exercise at school in the past week, prompting calls for a major intervention to tackle the country’s growing inactivity crisis.

Promising Practice 2 – your chance to tell us ‘what works’ in getting more people, more active, more often

In July 2014, a total of 952 survey responses were submitted to a review process which looked to identify 'good' and 'promising' practice from a broad range of physical activity providers in communities across the nation. The results of this project were included in the Public Health England report 'Identifying what works for local physical inactivity interventions', produced in collaboration with the ukactive Research Institute and the National Centre for Sport and Exercise Medicine.
