ukactive today (3rd April) announced innovative training equipment supplier milon UK as the three-year headline equipment partner for ukactive’s annual National Summit, the leading political event for the physical activity sector.

This follows a highly-successful partnership between ukactive and milon UK for National Summit 2016, which gathered more than 550 senior stakeholders from across the public health, clinical commissioning, local authority and physical activity sectors to discuss the burning issues facing society.

Imoves crowned winner of physical activity accelerator ActiveLab

Imoves overcame fierce competition from some of the physical activity sector’s hottest startups to be named inaugural winner of ukactive’s innovation accelerator programme ActiveLab.

Imoves, a digital teaching platform to help get schools active, prevailed in a battle of the 12 ActiveLab finalists, which saw each startup take to the stage to deliver a one-minute elevator pitch on the potential of their business to revolutionise the way we move. Imoves scooped the top prize of a premium accelerator toolkit worth more than £25,000 after winning over the judging panel and votes from the live audience.

ukactive Executive Director Steven Ward has branded Chancellor Philip Hammond’s Spring Budget as a “missed opportunity” for the government to demonstrate its commitment to tackling the nation’s physical inactivity crisis by investing in sector talent.

Hammond today confirmed a shake-up vocational and technical education in England which outlines a new framework for further education, and specifies 15 core areas of employment which the framework will deliver.

ukactive has confirmed a blockbuster line-up of expert speakers and sessions for ActiveLab Live! – the new one-day event exploring innovative solutions to the world’s mounting physical inactivity crisis.

Taking place at The Crystal in London on 15 March, ActiveLab Live! will focus on the future of the physical activity sector and features some of the leading lights from the fields of gaming, fitness and technology. The expanding role of digital technology in the UK will be explored and explained by Tech City UK Chief Operating Officer MB Christie. Meanwhile, James Millar from Mass Challenge will outline how established large companies can collaborate with disruptive new startups to adapt to the fast-changing business landscape.

Tanni Grey-Thompson urges radical action on high street health crisis

Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson has called for an urgent rethink of England’s “archaic” town planning laws which are blocking fitness studios from boosting physical activity on the country’s high streets.

The Chair of not-for-profit health body ukactive wants to see a radical overhaul of planning regulations to make it easier for fitness businesses to have a positive health impact on England’s unhealthy high streets, which she said are “drowning in a sea of betting shops, fried chicken joints and empty shop windows.”
