Together Achieving More - ukactive and COMPASS

Compass is the leading representative voice for children's sport and physical activity providers....

Compass has the vision that every child should have the opportunity to lead an active lifestyle. The number of boys and girls who are reaching the Chief Medical Officer's guidelines for physical exercise is in rapid decline, meaning a generation are growing up without physical activity as a normal part of their daily lives.

Compass acts to support, represent and give a voice to all providers of sport, physical activity and exercise in schools, the community, charities and public sector.

It represents over 10,000 children's activity providers every day, working closely with the sector on issues such as skills and training, access to provision, and best practice. Compass seeks to highlight the importance of children picking up healthy habits with regards to activity and exercise early in life, and make this case to government, the media, and the general public.

Compass have worked closely with industry experts to implement the 'Seal of Approval' audit system and create the new suite of 'Fit For Purpose' Qualifications, the qualifications were developed with the support of AfPE. - See more at: http://www.compassassociation.org.uk/#sthash.c2hOheaA.dpuf

In September 2014 it was agreed that ukactive would merge Compass into its membership. This decision was based on the feeling that it would bring considerable clarity and simplicity to a complex, crowded and confused landscape, provide a strategic lead and policy voice for key issues such as children's activity for activity providers, influence delivery systems and champion enhanced funding mechanisms relating to children's activity.

Going forward, Compass will form a dedicated component of the ukactive membership base - ukactiveKids. Through this membership grouping, members can come together to:

  • Help inform government policy with insight from the playing fields, playground and sportshalls of thousands of schools
  • Shape the direction and strategy for the sector, with a direct voice through to the ukactive board
  • Create a vision and structure for delivery and influence the lives of hundreds of thousands of children
  • Define standards and good practice, helping to ensure the safety of children who participate in member led activity
  • Where needed, work with key stakeholders to put in place regulations & accreditation in place to uphold standards
  • Stimulate the growth of the sector and the achievement of the vision of more children, more active, more often

Membership of ukactiveKids is open to any organisation with a role to play in getting more young people active. This includes a range of organisations who have supported COMPASS since its inception but also a much broader range of organisations - small, medium and large - that contribute to this agenda.

The benefits of membership are vast and diverse. From accessing the experience of the ukactive team for advice and guidance on funding, to tailored insight on engagement, participation and outreach strategies, ukactiveKids membership is there to support members to succeed. Whether it is hearing about the latest developments in the sector at ukactive's sector leading events, or driving the performance of businesses through access to ukactive's free of charge Business Performance Benchmarking tool, members have real benefits to sit alongside the fact that they are part of a UK wide movement to turn the tide of inactivity.
