ukactive for health
Whatever your age, there is good scientific evidence that being physically active can help us lead healthier and happier lives.
People who are physically active reduce their risk of developing major chronic diseases, such as coronary heart disease, stroke and type 2 diabetes by up to 50%, and their risk of premature death in general is reduced by 20-30%.
We also know that physical inactivity is a silent killer. It is the fourth highest cause of global mortality.
Physical activity is also widely acknowledged as an effective tool in the prevention and management of chronic disease, however physical activity is not a routine part of healthcare programmes at present. ukactive is working to change this and establish physical activity as a core business of the NHS.
In order to do so we work with a range of partners to deliver innovative physical activity programmes, such as Let's Get Moving, develop professional standards for the delivery of exercise in the management of disease, and conduct innovative research to demonstrate the evidence base for exercise.
Ukactive is also a founding member of the Joint Consultative Forum between the appropriate Medical Royal Colleges and Faculties, the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy, College of Occupational Therapists, and representative organisations within the activity sector.
