In 2021, the ukactive Research Institute partnered with the Swimming Teachers Association to conduct a study on inclusion within the teaching arm of the swimming industry. This aimed to get more people engaged in the activity through making swimming a more inclusive and welcoming environment for all demographics to learn and teach this life-saving skill.

Working closely alongside ukactive’s Head of Inclusion and Diversity Timothy Mathias, a bespoke survey was created and distributed across the STA’s membership base. Following this, a focus group was conducted to gain in-depth views and understand the experiences of swimming teachers. The findings of this mixed-method approach were used to form a set of conclusions and actionable recommendations presented in a report.

In October 2021, the research and its findings were presented at the STA conference.
