In 2019, the ukactive Research Institute were funded by Sport England to undertake a project looking at automated Drowning Detection Systems in swimming pools. This extensive project included research on the types and varieties of different systems, real-life testing of the main systems against the international standard, and development of new testing procedures and protocols to include live environments.

This project, including all pool testing, was carried out in the later part of 2019 and reflects the current situation at that time. Since then there have been further publications on the subject that will not be included in the research. There has also been changes in both the hardware and software elements of the systems that were tested, with some having undergone significant technological development. The testing focused on the collective performance against the ISO standard, and not on individual manufacturers. As such the results should be viewed as relevant to the systems at that point in time (late 2019), and not to the current technologies or systems offered by the manufacturers.
