ukactive has today announced Sarah Howard, Chair of the British Chambers of Commerce, and Sir Keith Mills, former Deputy Chairman of the London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games, as keynote speakers for the ukactive Conference.

More than 700 sector leaders and policymakers will gather at the Guildhall on 13 October for the sector’s flagship policy conference, to discuss learnings from the COVID-19 pandemic, and develop the industry’s influence in the nation’s recovery and growth.

The event has a long history of attracting some of the most influential voices in health and Government, and this year’s agenda is no exception.

Sarah Howard was elected as Chair of the British Chambers of Commerce in October 2019, following success in leading boards through change and advocating for greater business involvement in driving positive community outcomes over the course of her career.

She is only the second woman to take on the prestigious role, and has used her influence on the national stage to continue to encourage businesses to better serve and support local communities.

Since September 2009, Sarah has also been Chair of Abbeycroft Leisure, a Suffolk-based charitable leisure trust generating £6m in social value every year. She has become a firm advocate of the physical activity sector’s potential to support the health and wellbeing of the nation by collaborating more closely with local public health teams, the NHS, and the wider business community.

Sarah will deliver a keynote speech on the increased recognition of health and wellbeing in business and draw from her experience as Chair of Abbeycroft Leisure to outline the ways in which the sector can collaborate more closely with external stakeholders to drive better public health outcomes.

She is joined on the agenda by keynote speaker Sir Keith Mills, founder of the Air Miles and Nectar customer loyalty programmes and former deputy chairman of the London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Earlier this year, Sir Keith Mills was appointed to advise on a new government plan, which aims to use incentives and rewards to help people make healthier lifestyle choices, and support our national recovery from COVID-19.

Sir Keith will give a keynote speech on the genesis of the Government’s plan to incentivise people to make healthier lifestyle choices, and reflect on the ways in which the sector can contribute to this effort.

CEO of ukactive Huw Edwards said: “Our industry has demonstrated incredible levels of resilience and creativity over the past 18 months, and exemplified a dedication to support the health and wellbeing of local communities.

“The ukactive Conference presents an opportunity for the sector to come together and explore how to best leverage this dedication and energy to level-up physical activity and maximise the industry’s role in the nation’s future.

“We are delighted to bring such a strong and diverse cast of speakers to the Conference to support us in plotting our roadmap for the sector’s growth and evolution, and its partnership with Government and its agencies to get more people active.

“Sarah Howard’s personal story is one we hope will inspire the sector to continue to think outside of the box and build purposeful partnerships to serve local communities, and Sir Keith Mills will bring his incredible experience and unrivalled vision to the conversation that seeks to transform our view of preventative health.”
