Parks have a “fundamental” role to play in tackling the UK’s inactivity crisis and delivering a wide range of health and social benefits, a government select committee has heard.

Speaking as an expert witness at the Communities and Local Government Committee’s ‘Future of public parks inquiry’ in Westminster yesterday (24th October), ukactive Strategic Projects Director Will Smithard said the central role that parks and green spaces play in promoting health and cohesion among local communities makes them one of our most valuable public assets. He added that outdoor exercise delivers an estimated £2.2bn of health benefits to adults in England each year.

Fitness sector primed for substantial growth: ukactive report

Consumer thirst for fitness will see gym sector become ‘shining star’ of post-Brexit economy

The value of the UK gym sector is set to increase by £1.1bn in 2016, driven by a hive of investment activity amid growing consumer appetite for fitness, according to a new financial report from non-profit health body ukactive.

Released today (18th October), The Rise of the Activity Sector report spotlights the UK’s fast-changing fitness landscape and predicts it to grow by 17 per cent in 2016. Valuation specialist Mazars and sponsorship experts Nielsen Sports conducted analyses for the report, which estimates the gym sector will be worth £7.7bn by the end of 2016 (up from £6.6bn last year) as investors are enticed by the sector’s strong growth prospects.

Developments in data, social media, virtual reality and wearable tech are having a major impact on the physical activity landscape and ActiveLab will augment these new opportunities to produce pioneering health solutions.

Ambitious product and service-based startups are encouraged to join the programme, which will identify and nurture truly innovative products and services that will shape the future of the health and physical activity sector. The 12-week programme aims to unearth innovative concepts that can revolutionise health and fitness, following in the vein of global success stories such as Fitbit and MYZONE.
